Fan the Deck is written primarily for college-bound high school students who demonstrate a clear proficiency in writing. It builds style and more sophisticated sentence skills – coordination and subordination. It develops the writer’s awareness of his/her audience and the kind of thinking and organization for college-level writing.

Bob Cahill and Herb Hrebic co-authored Fan the Deck.

Key Features:

  1. The major writing assignments are those which students will be required to write in other academic classes and college courses, e.g., definition paper, analysis paper, comparison-contrast paper, argumentative paper, and research paper.
  2. Writing across the curriculum topics are suggested with each assignment.
  3. A college admissions letter writing is analyzed and written.

  6. Our famous Sentence Opening Sheet helps students analyze and revise a composition. Review the teaching tips link on our web site for the College Board’s analysis of this practical revision strategy. You’ll love it!
  7. Student think sheets assist students in focusing on the content and organization.
  8. Exercises in writing in active voice and selecting concrete verbs help with verb power.
  9. Correcting faulty parallelism and subordinating unimportant ideas are stressed to help with sentence fluency.
