Organized like Check the Deck, Flip the Deck provides a variety of writing skills to improve sentence style and paragraph development. Students work together in preparing many of the assignments. Six units provide enough materials to serve as writing activities for an entire year. Each writing prompt includes a scoring rubric. Students learn to focus by brainstorming on specially designed think sheets. Our famous SOS sheet and checklist sheets help with revision.
Flip's teacher's manual includes information about cooperative learning strategies and contains cooperative learning feedback and grading sheets.
Tanis Knight, the Director of Curriculum in the Camas School District and former educator of the year in Washington, authored Flip the Deck.
Key features:
- The major writing assignments are fun and geared for young authors: Students describe a room, write a character sketch, describe a wacky invention, argue an opinion, write an article for People magazine, and write an on the job memo.
- Oral language activities begin each unit to help bridge oral and written language. Students unscramble sentences, create an infinite set of sentences, write new beginnings, build a language warehouse, practice supporting ideas, communicate with different purposes, and practice interview techniques.
- Students improve their sentence writing skills by expanding and stretching using journalistic questions, and combine ideas with glue words, colorful words, and ING words.
- Composing rules help students wipe out fragments and practice punctuating rules.
- Writing with style encourages students to do just that by using similes, creating a mood, jazzing up with alliteration, writing for an audience, hooking the reader with a strong lead, and building a structure with transition words.
