Written by Larry Lewin and Tanis Knight, Tap the Deck integrates sentence combining techniques into process-oriented writing assignments. Students learn to focus on their topic and support general ideas with specific details while narrating, explaining, arguing, and describing. Besides oral language and sentence combining units, young writers practice ten major writing assignments. Scoring rubrics in the teacher's manual are provided for each prompt.
Key features:
- Major writing units: Young authors narrate about a remembered place, describe a favorite animal, solve a real everyday problem, argue an opinion, observe a chase scene, explain a situation, write a letter to a 2nd grader, describe creatively from the point of view of shoes, narrate about a peevish problem, and report on an invention.
- Oral language activities enable students to unscramble sentences, play with a language machine, create new names (sniglets), coin new verbs, discuss unusual meanings of words, and discuss idioms.
- Students build a writer's vocabulary by combining with connectors, glue words, locator words, and ING words, by expanding with journalistic questions, and by rearranging ideas.
- Specific units help students identify and correct fragments and run-ons in practical ways.
