Workshops

Stack the Deck authors have conducted writing workshops for school districts throughout the country presenting practical techniques for teaching the writing process. These workshops range from half day to full day sessions.

Our company also sponsors full day seminars. These seminars are designed to help teachers increase student achievement through a variety of practical and highly effective strategies which integrate writing instruction with assessment. Participants will be taught a system for designing scoring guides (grading sheets) to help students more accurately assess their writing improvement. They will also learn how to manage the paper load by helping students with a combination of strategies to take a more active and independent role in the writing process. In short, the ideas are practical.

Objectives

Educational Goals: To present a functional and practical approach to the teaching of writing, grades 3-12.

  • construct scoring rubrics that will strengthen teacher instruction and evaluation of student writing

  • develop a writer's vocabulary that can be used by the entire staff in teaching the writing process

  • design brainstorming sheets to help students focus on content and organization

  • implement a strategy for teaching students how to analyze and revise a first draft

  • provide strategies for helping students work with each other in peer evaluation

What Your Colleagues Say About Herb's workshops:

"I have taught school for 19 years and attended numerous writing workshops. Herb Hrebic's excessive energy and spontaneous desire for teaching others techniques to improve writing skills was contagious and effective. After leaving with additional knowledge and methods to use with my fourth graders, I felt I had acquired worthwhile materials presented in a professional manner.

Hats off to you and your program!"

Nancy Bleich
Julington Creek Elementary
Jacksonville, Florida

"I had the serendipitous experience of attending a mini-workshop of Herb Hrebic's while attending the CRA convention in San Jose, California. Rarely, if ever, have I come away from a workshop with such rejuvenation, enthusiasm, and practical ideas I intend to put into practice.

I am certain I do not have to tell you what a delightfully energetic and entertaining speaker Mr. Hrebic is, but the pragmatic and energy saving information he shared with us was dense with substance. I immediately found myself a comfortable place to think and write notes when Herb's talk ended."

Elizabeth Gage
Pleasanton Middle School
Pleasanton, California

"Thanks for the practical ideas for evaluating writing. The presentation was focused and organized. I plan to focus on revising/rewriting with my students. Mr. Hrebic presented some good, practical, easy (non-labor intensive) suggestions.

Mr. Hrebic was a very enthusiastic and entertaining presenter and shared very useful information! He was very organized and provided us with handouts with ready to go assessment ideas."

"This was the most informative seminar I have attended. Mr. Lewin is well prepared, informative, and enjoyable. I appreciate the fact that he is a classroom teacher."

"He gave me tons of ideas to try out."

"An excellent presentation – fast moving and immediately useful for my classes."

"A wealth of practical ideas. A real practicing professional."

"Excellent! He generated so many great ideas for our classes."

What Your Colleagues Say About Our Assessment Strategies Workshops

"Terrific! Finally, an organized systematic approach to the teaching of writing. I found this course had a solid foundation in grammar and mechanics, yet did not make it dry."

"You shared with us a system of organized teaching of writing that makes sense and takes some of the guesswork out of sequencing the skills. I appreciate the fact that it still leaves room for creative teaching and individualizing and does not sacrifice the studentŐs self image. Furthermore, it's fun. Thank you."

Description of Our Assessment Strategies in the Writing Process, Grades 3-12

This session will provide teacher-tested, non threatening strategies for teaching revision through sentence manipulatory skills, a scoring rubric, and a special teacher labor-saving device. Through our writer's vocabulary, students not only improve their syntactic fluency but also use those same skills to revise a first draft. Finally, teachers will be shown how to help students analyze a draft's strengths and weaknesses at a glance with a special teaching tool.
